An award winning photographer attuned to the nuances of gestures and expressions, Janjaap Dekker seeks to capture the essence of people, events and places. Through years of travel and creating stories Janjaap has honed his skills as a storyteller, bringing you not just singularly beautiful and remarkable images, but photo essays with depth and insight.
Equally at home on the front lines as in the studio, he relishes working as a fine arts photographer, to create strikingly original images that have graced the covers and pages of national magazines and the walls of museums and galleries.
His education started at the Delft Institute of Technology in the Netherlands under famed graphic design innovator Wim Crouwel. He continues to study and develop his craft, most recently studying with Mary Ellen Mark and Graciela Iturbide.
As a master printer in both black & white and color Janjaap loves to print his own work, imparting it with an artistry, a clarity and a beauty that has won him several awards (Golden Light print competition '97, Gordon Parks Photo Contest '98, New California Media Award '98 and '99).
In addition to his freelance, commercial and personal work he is Director of Photography and Staff Photographer for El Andar Magazine (www.elandar.com)
